Hidden Storage in the Kitchen
DIY Double Drawer Organizer
I love clear counter space, but this also means that most of your practial kitchen items need to be hidden away. My kitchen utensil drawer was a wreck, and impossible to find anything quickly.
Most kitchen utensils are shallow enough that you can take advantage of the drawer size and maximize your storage with a hidden double drawer.
Double drawer organizers are readily available to purchase, but also surprisingly simply to DIY. With some pre-measuring and basic tools, you can double your space and get organized for a third of the cost of store-bought systems.
Using plywood, craft poplar wood and some basic tools I was able to maximize the storage space of this kitchen drawer and add some major organization.

Spices can quickly become cluttered and hard to locate. This DIY in-drawer spice rack has given me a streamlined system that’s neatly tucked away in a drawer.
Pull out drawer storage is another great option to help hide countertop appliances & large cookware.
Using small baskets or bins can help keep food storage containers and small kids items neat and contained.
Hidden Storage in the Living Room
DIY Storage Chest
With three kids and an open concept living space, blankets and toys are always strewn about. I had an empty nook in the corner of my living room that needed a new look.
Using a large storage trunk, chest or ottoman is a great way to hide the mess and allows for easy clean up at the end of the day. I created a DIY version that was big enough to house multiple blankets as well as toys.
As an added bonus, the bench can be used as additional seating if necessary.
Alternative Storage Solutions
Think outside the box when it comes to the storage spaces of your home. This six drawer dresser would typically be found in a bedroom, but provides tons of storage in the main living area.
Large baskets and bins are also great for storing small toy items and blankets.
Furniture that functions for your family and its needs is a must for helping to maintain clutter. Behind the sliding doors of my entertainment center, you’ll find electronics, DVDs, and some small play items.
Give yourself space
It’s such a relief when you can love the spaces that you live in. My house is by no means neat and tidy 100% of the time, but having dedicated spaces that provide orderly hidden storage makes it much easier to get things back in place quickly.
Before you organize any space, be sure to do a thorough edit of your items and eliminate anything you don’t love, need, or use. And for those items you’re not quite ready to separate with yet or simply don’t have the room, be sure to check out an Extra Space near you.
